Just dropping by to let you know I ´m still around (and getting about.) On a recent long weekend (does four nights count) we covered a fair few kilometres and set off from Jaén province to Extremadura – where Spain meets Portugal. I specifically wanted to visit Cáceres, Trujillo and Mérida and managed a sneak peek at Badajoz and Zagra too. All with incredible history and architecture.

We also spent a day and night in Portugal which we´ve both fallen in love with. As soon as we crossed the border it seemed much greener. Trees, often cork trees lined the roadsides and charm oozed. We´ll be back Portugal!

Our overnight stop in Portugal, just 12km from the Spanish border was the small hilltop town of Marvao, a beautifully preserved historical town quaintly sitting within its ancient city walls. Cobbles, steep, narrow streets and uneven buildings fashioned out of stone, capture the imagination and captivated me. It would have been no surprise to see Romans or Moors coming round the corners or in the sentry turrets of the castle.

Soon to be on Only Spain is the gorgeous Hotel Monasterio de Rocamador in Almendral near Badajoz (and near Portugal.)
